Heat Sealing Advances Heat Up

Published on July 28, 2020

"The benefit of machine-intelligence technology is risk mitigation." - Kent Hevenor

It is no secret that heat sealing has been a perennial mainstay in the process of medical device and pharmaceutical product development. Rapid technology advancements are creating new excitement around this sterile packaging cornerstone.

With traceability and ongoing UDI labeling requirements continuing to evolve, new capabilities offered by machine intelligence are getting noticed, for good reason. The latest heat sealers hitting the market can interact with other packaging line components, for example. These levels of communication capability can detect, and potentially address, process issues in real time, with the possibility of avoiding costly runs of flawed output.

Other advantages emerging from the next gen of smarter sealers relate to traceability, seal integrity validation and UDI—all welcome possibilities across industry. A Q&A conversation recently published in Packaging Digest offers multiple perspectives from several sealer innovators about what is available now, how these smart sealers integrate on the line, and what is yet to come.
