How the FDA continues to generate the science and data of a pandemic, keep the public health on active duty, and serve innovation, in the year that upended the world.

On April 1st, 2020, we published a blog post on the Herculean effort taking place between governmental and private sectors in the escalating fight against COVID-19. The collaboration aimed to, among other things, overcome stark shortages of ventilators that were anticipated across the nation.

Now it is well into fall 2020. We are a half-year older, wiser and well supplied—thanks to those early, eager partnerships forged at the front lines of the pandemic battle. Perhaps that’s why this interview with FDA commissioner, Dr. Stephen Hahn* is so rewarding to hear. Dr. Hahn took the FDA helm in December 2019—talk about hitting the ground running! Hahn speaks about what was happening then, and now, with the ongoing work of the FDA and private partners.

It’s their job to oversee the entire medical industry, all while facing urgency for COVID-19 therapeutics and vaccines. It’s amazing how the FDA’s strategic goals have remained on track, vaccines are in multiple stages of research and development, and there is humble confidence to carry us forward.
